Swarming Termites in Raleigh, Cary, and Wake County, NC

Think you’re seeing swarming termites?

Seeing swarming termites around your home can be alarming. These winged termites leave their colony to start new ones. In the Raleigh, Cary, and greater Wake County area, swarms most often appear in the spring, often after warm rains.

“Swarmers” are often mistaken for flying ants. Termites have straight antennae, equal-length wings, and thick waists, while ants have bent antennae, uneven wings, and narrow waists. If you notice large numbers of winged insects indoors or piles of discarded wings on windowsills, it may indicate a termite colony nearby.

Swarming termites do not cause damage themselves, but they signal that a mature colony is present. Subterranean termites—the most common type in North Carolina—live in the soil and can quietly damage wood structures over time.
